Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth are the last four molars to erupt, often in our late teens to early twenties. While wisdom teeth can offer support and strength to the jaw, if there’s not enough room for them in your mouth, they can cause pain, discomfort, and even infection. If this happens, you can count on the compassionate doctors at Seaport Family Dentistry to perform gentle wisdom teeth extractions and give you the relief you need. If you’re in pain, don’t wait! Do I have to have my wisdom teeth removed?

No! If you’re not experiencing any pain or discomfort from your wisdom teeth, there’s no need to have them removed. Keeping your wisdom teeth can aid your chewing ability, add support to your jaw, and prevent other teeth from shifting, helping to prevent future dental problems.

Why are they called wisdom teeth?

Most people cut their wisdom teeth between the ages of 17 and 25, so they’re colloquially called wisdom teeth to reference this older, wiser age. That said, not everyone cuts all or any of their wisdom teeth. Luckily for us, missing your wisdom teeth won’t actually make you less wise!

Do I need to get my wisdom teeth replaced?

Your wisdom teeth are nice to have, but not mandatory for your oral or jaw health. Some go as far as to call the wisdom teeth vestigial or functionless. If you would like to get them replaced and have sufficient jawbone, it is possible. However, the reasons for wisdom tooth removal often mean that the risks outweigh the benefits.
