How to Identify a Dental Emergency

emergency dental care

Many dentists offer same-day emergency dentistry for severe dental issues and injuries. It’s important to have an emergency dentist’s number in your phone contacts in case a dental emergency arises.

Wondering what counts as a dental emergency? Great question! These are some of the most common dental emergencies that require immediate treatment:

Knocked-Out Tooth

If your permanent tooth is knocked out, pick it up by its crown (the chewing surface). Be careful to not touch its roots. Gently rinse off your knocked-out tooth without rubbing it with any sort of fabric. If possible, put it back in its socket. If you’re able to put the tooth back in your mouth, bite down gently on a piece of clean gauze to keep it in place while you travel to your dentist’s office.

Broken Tooth or Dental Restoration

If dental trauma leaves you with a cracked or broken tooth or lost filling, contact an emergency dentist right away. The sooner they can examine your tooth, the faster they can repair the break to prevent infection. If it’s a broken bridge or denture, you should still seek treatment right away to restore your chewing function.

Severe Toothache

If you have tooth pain that just won’t go away, you need emergency dental care. Severe toothaches could indicate a larger oral health issue lingering beneath the surface, such as internal tooth damage, gum infection, severe tooth decay, and more.
